Great value on a used dulcimer

I was looking for a good deal on a mountain dulcimer and found their used instrument section. I snagged a 'factory second' model for a really fair price, almost $100 less than a new one. It plays perfectly, I can't even tell what the 'imperfection' was supposed to be. Shipping wasn't free, but the savings on the instrument itself made it very much worth it. I signed up for their newsletter too, hoping for more deals down the line. A solid buy for budget-conscious players.

Fantastic instructional book

I bought 'Beginning Dulcimer' and it's been a game changer! The lessons are so clear and easy to follow. I've been trying to learn for a while and this book finally clicked for me. It arrived sooner than I thought, which was a nice surprise. I'm already playing simple songs! Definitely going to get more books from them once I master this one. I told my friend who plays ukulele about it, they should check out their stuff too.

Got a case for my dulcimer

I ordered a padded gig bag for my mountain dulcimer. It got here pretty quick, took about 4 days to reach me in California. The quality is good, feels sturdy enough to protect it when I take it to jam sessions. My old case was falling apart, so this was much needed. It fits my instrument well, not too snug, not too loose. Just a straightforward purchase, no drama. Happy with it.

hey, are the factory second dulcimers still good quality? i'm on a budget but don't want something totally messed up.

T Todd 1 month ago
Yeah, totally. I got a factory second mountain dulcimer a few months ago, and honestly, the 'flaw' was super tiny, like a slight finish imperfection. Plays beautifully.

From what I hear, they're usually just cosmetic dings or minor stuff. Functionality should be fine, they wouldn't sell anything unplayable.

How do Folkcraft dulcimers compare to McSpadden? I'm torn between the two for my first one.

C Carly 1 month ago
Both are great, honestly. Folkcraft has a really rich tone, and I feel like their craftsmanship is super consistent. McSpadden are also solid but sometimes a bit brighter sounding.

I started with a Folkcraft and love it. For a first dulcimer, you can't go wrong with either. Maybe watch some comparison videos on YouTube if you can find them.

Anyone know if the newsletter signup discount applies to actual instruments or just accessories? Looking at a new folk harp.

C Carly Reyes 1 month ago
Pretty sure it's for everything, I used mine on a dulcimer case and some books last year.

i think it's often a general percentage off, so it should work on the harp. definitely worth signing up!

what's the deal with returns if i don't like an instrument? is it a huge hassle?

O Omar Hughes 1 month ago
I returned some strings that I ordered by mistake, and it was super easy. They just had me send them back, got my refund pretty quick.

For actual instruments, I haven't done it myself, but I heard it's straightforward if you're within the policy timeframe. Just make sure to read their return terms for instruments specifically.

Thinking of getting a dulcimer kit for my dad for Christmas. Do these usually ship pretty quick to the West Coast, like California?

T Troy Torres 2 months ago
Mine got here to Oregon in about a week. They package them really well too.

It can depend on the time of year. Holiday season might be slower. I ordered some strings around Black Friday and they took a bit longer than usual.

i'm pretty new to dulcimers, are folkcraft models good for beginners or are they more for experienced players?

J James Kaur 2 months ago
Definitely good for beginners! I started on one, and they're very forgiving and have a nice clear sound, which helps a lot when you're learning.

Yep, they're very popular with new players. Plus, they have tons of instructional books and stuff that pair well with their instruments.
